This had a really long url, so I will borrow it with full credit to "CBS Marketwatch" and Newsweek.

Halliburton won't lead Iraq rebuild

HOUSTON (CBS.MW) - Halliburton, the giant energy services, engineering and construction firm once run by Vice President Dick Cheney, is out of the running for a $600 million rebuilding contract in Iraq, Newsweek reported Friday.

The Houston-based company referred questions to the U.S. Agency for International Development. An agency spokesperson was not immediately available.

Citing Timothy Beans, the chief acquisition officer for the USAID, Newsweek reported that Halliburton is not one of the two finalists for the contract, though the company could provide services through a subcontracting agreement. The USAID plans to award the primary contract next week.

Newsweek said it's still unclear whether Halliburton removed itself from contention, its bid was uncompetitive, or if the Bush administration eliminated the firm from the short list, given the firm's history with Cheney."

Gee, I guess those "connections" really helped! But what's a little typically unfounded innuendo among friends. There's always "Salon."
