Entry Deadline EXTENDED: July 2, 2012

ArtSpace Herndon and the Council for the Arts of Herndon present the second annual “At Home in Herndon” Town Calendar Photography Competition.

Professional and amateur photographers aged 16 and older are invited to submit entries to the competition; the deadline for submissions is June 15, 2012. Subjects for all entries must be located within the corporate limits of the Town of Herndon, and special consideration will be given to entries that depict people participating in seasonal or community events.

Photographs submitted to the competition will be evaluated by a select panel of jurors, who will select the finalists in the competition that will be invited to exhibit in ArtSpace Herndon’s Post Gallery.

From these finalist photographs, the Town of Herndon will select photographs to be published in the 2013 “At Home in Herndon” Town Calendar. Each year in December, more than 10,000 calendars are printed and distributed to all citizens and businesses throughout the town. In addition to the exhibit and publication in the calendar, finalist photographs will also be eligible to receive the “At Home in Herndon People’s Choice Award,” given to the photograph that best captures Herndon.

I agree with jeremy.
That is totally asinine. Kind of like adding a monthly service fee for EZ pass users.
Where does this money go? Why would anyone pay the fee to give up the rights to the their work? Shouldn't it be the other way around????

FYI:

The artist fee is imposed by Artspace to help offset the cost of the final show/display and artist reception, where the winning entries as well as others will be on display for the public. The fees also allow the show to be free to the public.

Artist entry fees are standard practice in almost all calls for art for adults. Fees are rarely (but sometimes) charged for youth calls for art.

The issue I have with this is it is a town function. Town calendar.
There should be no fee for entry.

I guess the problem is that ArtSpace and the Town of Herndon are at cross-purposes here. Charging a fee to enter art shows where the artists have the opportunity to sell their works and/or gain exposure is not unusual. But this is also a town-sponsored contest to have a photo on the town calendar. Charging amateur photographers a fee to submit a digital file copy for a calendar contest... that is unusual.

By combining the two (art show/photo contest) they are effectively excluding casual photographers.

It sounds like one of 2 things should happen.
Divorce the town and Artspace from the whole process.
Keep Artspace involved and they donate the space and don't charge a fee.

Good comments - I will pass them along to Artspace and the PIO's office for consideration; public-private partnerships are always a little tricky. Perhaps the fee should be a token one like $1 or $2, with Town and out of town differentials, like classes at the Community Center; or perhaps it should be a privately run event by Artspace only and the Town could purchase rights to use the winning photographs or perhaps Artspace could donate their time and the venue since the Town is paying their mortgage. All good suggestions, thanks!

PIO means Public Information Officer.

So a 'pubic-private partnership' doesn't mean free services from private groups. It can mean uncontrolled fees. This is something to remember.

I feel this should be taken up by the Town Council.
And this is not a flame, but your suggestion that the Town purchase rights to use the winning photographs appears to come from your affiliation with the Council for the Arts rather than your councilmember seat.
We should be spending less money, not more. Especially considering the Town is paying the mortgage.
Having said that, I do feel that if the Council for the Arts and Artspace are to be involved, it should be on a donation basis for time and venue.
The advertising alone is a great benefit to both organizations.

Hi Demosthenes, CAH is donating its time, we don't get any portion of the entry fees - that goes solely to paying for the reception, the cost to hang the winning entries, etc.

Actually, the Town Calendar has been produced for much lower costs to the Town now that we have switched from using a paid, professional photographer, to using essential 'royalty free', unpaid non professional photographers. The Town currently is not paying any photographers for any work right now, so it's a very economical solution.

Typical honorariums for use of photos is also quite inexpensive, but could potentially be donated by either Artspace or CAH, if the calendar competition continues. Currently, this looks to be the last year for it!

But again, great comments and I will make sure to pass them along when the entire program is re-evaluated this fall!

How about moving the competition to a Facebook or Internet based competition voted on by the public?
