Do you mean the 1949 one, or the Biblical one?

I haven't changed any settings and now I have to move my cursor thingy to the tiny arrows in the corners to click n scroll --- think my pad is malfunctioning or is it a setting to be reset ?

You can plug a real mouse into one of the usb ports on the laptop. I do that most of the time with my laptop. It works MUCH better than that piece 'o poo touchpad thing.

(EDIT - see below - this initial recollection was wrong in several details.)

I am not certain. Abraham (THE Abraham) had two sons that I remember, Jacob and Esau, who were twins. The story has it that Jacob was ambitious and avaricious, and he managed to be born first. Later, God decided to bless Jacob instead of Esau. If I recall the story correctly, Jacob grabbed an angel and would not let him go until he had blessed him! Maybe that was someone else, though. At any rate, Jacob got the nod. But God began to call Jacob Israel, and I forget what that meant. The plan at that point was to make a nation out of him.

Jacob then had twelve sons as I recall. One of the sons was very special, and the others sold him into slavery to get him out of the way so they would get the inheritance when old Jacob kicked the bucket. (MAN, some of these religious types...) But that son did very well as a slave, because he had God's guidance. At some point he became an advisor to the king. He managed the grain, and stored lots of grain during the bumper-crop years. And then in the lean years, that nation had food and the rest of the world had to buy it from them. And then came the sons of Jacob who had sold their brother out, to buy grain, and their brother was in charge of the grain, and an advisor to the king... they thought they were in deep doo doo, but he was merciful to them because he said, who knows what should have happened, we are brothers. And Jacob blessed him and told some of the others off before he died.

Those sons became the tribes of Israel as I understand and recall the story.

I moved this into the Religion forum.

(edit) Hmm, I looked it up and the story was that Jacob and Esau were the sons of Isaac, who was the grandson of Abraham. Jacob was born second, but he had grabbed Esau's heel, trying to stop him from being born first. Evidently Esau didn't care much about his birthright, but Jacob was a clever go-getter. Then, blind old Isaac was going to bless his oldest son Esau, and Jacob's mother set Jacob up with a disguise to deceive Isaac, and Jacob lied to his father about who he was, and thus he got the blessing. It just goes to show, you never know who's going to be blessed, or why.

haha...... reading your post I began to suspect you had scurried for a quick internet scramble for an answer ... was cute....I first suspected that a touch of Alzheimer's had scrambled some of the facts or you had set the story in a humorous context for fun - as it certainly was. But the short smple answer is found in Gen 32:28. And actually, you mentioned a special meaning to it all and on that part you are absolutely correct, but I will spare you guys that explanation due to a percieved lack of concern.
My purpose was to see if anyone actually knew the answer..... period..... With so many posters attempting to use thier "alleged" biblical knowledge to slam the ol' Overseer - one would think that such a basic question with such a simple answer would generate a decent response from such a posse of experts.
One interesting fact however is that the nation, Israel, stemming from one man is still in existence yet today amidst such a worldwide attempt to exterminate them by various nations...... guess they must be a special bunch ( God's "chosen" people .... referred to also as "the Children of Israel" ...... now we see why - they actually did come from him )

thanks for playing Bob

Overseer
( incidentally FWIW,, Jesus' bloodline can be traced back through Jacob --- as prophesied )

At the risk of eternal difficulties... I am told that there is a little-known saying with a very special meaning to some Jewish people. "Next time... choose somebody else." I think I understand.
